Tutors and trainers are employed by nonprofit organizations, corporations, and schools of all sizes. Although positions are available throughout the United States, the best opportunities can be found in large cities such as Boston, Chicago, New York, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Starting Out

Many nonprofit organizations and corporations offer opportunities to tutor, mentor, or train; most positions are voluntary or provide a small stipend. You can research possible tutor positions on the Internet or ask a local charity or advocacy group if they need volunteers.

Tutors often advance by working with larger groups of students. However, they are most rewarded by having a student reach a hard-earned goal—becoming an accomplished reader, graduating from high school, or learning how to be a responsible adult. Some tutors with a passion for this line of work can become trainers for an organization or nonprofit group.

Trainers can advance by being assigned more tutors to train, by being promoted to higher-level positions within their organization, or by moving on to work at larger and more prestigious organizations.

Offer to tutor neighborhood children. If their parents like your work, ask them to refer your talents to others.
