Education and Training Requirements

High School

You don’t need a high school diploma to become a blogger, but obtaining as much education as possible will help you to become a well-rounded person. Plus, since most people don't work as full-time bloggers, you will need an education to prepare for a full-time job. Recommended high school classes include English, business, creative writing, speech, and computer science. Since bloggers must work to attract both advertisers and readers, it is a good idea to take advertising and marketing classes to hone your skills in these areas.

Postsecondary Education

Although not required, it is a good idea to obtain at least some college training in writing. That way, you’ll become a more confident and skilled writer. Classes in digital media, online journalism and editing, and other Web-based curricula will also be useful.

Certification, Licensing, and Special Requirements

Certification or Licensing

There are no certification or licensing requirements for bloggers.

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Successful bloggers have a lot of experience as writers—working as reporters for their high school yearbooks and newspapers, writing for their school television or radio stations, or writing their own blogs.

Bloggers must be very creative and excellent writers. They should have strong opinions and be able to express these opinions in written form. They should have a broad general knowledge, be skilled in research techniques, and be computer literate. Other important traits include curiosity, initiative, and persistence. They must also be able to accept criticism from readers who may not share their opinions. Finally, bloggers need good advertising and marketing skills in order to attract paid advertisements and fans to their blog.
