Summer Program Overview

Our summer associates work on matters of immediate importance to the firm’s clients. We have no rigid work assignment or rotation system. Summer associates have the opportunity to choose their own assignments from a wide range of departments and practice groups. Summer associates receive valuable training from working closely on a day-to-day basis with their supervising lawyers and from prompt feedback on all assignments. We have designed formal training and orientation programs to supplement this hands-on training, and lawyers take primary responsibility for each summer associate—ser...

Survey Says

  • “As a summer associate I received substantive assignments from a variety of attorneys. There were also ample opportunities to observe or sit in on proceedings or preparation for depositions and the like. Typically I would receive feedback in person from the assigning attorney.”
  • “At Foley, you are able to choose what assignments are interesting to you from a bank of assignments that are posted online. These assignments involve every aspect of the firm, ranging from Pro bono to Business to Litigation. This was really helpful for me as a summer associate who didn't know what department I wanted be in, or what area of law I wanted to practice. The assignments themselves were all real issues that attorneys at the firm needed help with. You could get an assignment from partner or someone as junior as a first year associate, so I was able to work with a lot of different people during my summer. …”
  • “I enjoyed my firm's approach to a ‘DIY summer’ and allowing summer associates to pick and choose the assignments they were interested in and to get a wide variety of experiences through all the different departments. The firm also offers a "business internship" where you are mentored by a partner in the business department and get to shadow them on deals. I got a lot of substantive work this way and was even given the opportunity to take the first crack at drafting financing documents.”
  • “Basic trainings throughout the summer were very practical for learning what junior associates at the firm do across the various practice areas. Work assignments were often accompanies by opportunities to sit in on client calls or observe how your contribution was utilized.”
  • “Summer associates were encouraged to invite firm attorneys to lunch, often in small groups. Many summers took advantage of this opportunity at least a few times a week, if not nearly every day. We also had regular evening social events, including happy hours and activities such as a trip to Fenway, a cooking class, bowling, an escape room, and a party at one of the partner's homes. In general, there was a feeling of camaraderie among the summer class, which was facilitated by the relatively small class size (about 18 in the Boston office).”
  • “The firm did a great job of having summer events every week that were varied and fun. It provided us with opportunities to socialize with attorneys across the different departments.”
  • “The events were a lot of fun and well organized.”
  • “Everyone is just as friendly as they seemed then. Obviously the work expectations are more demanding, and it's harder to juggle assignments as a full-time associate. But those are things to be expected. Additionally, I expressed a practice area interest both as an incoming summer and as an incoming first-year, and the firm has made it a priority to provide me with opportunities within that practice area.”
  • “The Foley culture is very collegial, and everyone wants you to succeed at the firm. I thought that was a ‘sell’ during my summer, but was excited to see that is what the firm is really like!”
  • “The summer program was a fair reflection of full-time work. You don't by any means work at the same volume as a summer associate, but what I observed and was told basically comports with my experience as a first year associate. …”
  • “Softball.”
  • “A cooking class attended by associates and partners of the firm.”
  • “The trip to Fenway was hard to beat. The firm's tickets are excellent (prime box seats right behind home plate).”
