High School

A high school diploma or GED is generally the minimum educational requirement for this job. While in school take classes in theater arts, drama, math, English, and business. All will help you learn the basics and hone skills. Be sure to participate in your school’s drama club, theatrical productions, and activities. These will give you experience that will prove helpful later in your career.

Postsecondary Education

While a high school diploma is the minimum educational requirement, it should be noted that most people who hold jobs as theater managers have postsecondary education with degrees in areas such as music, theater arts, drama, business management, or marketing.

A college education provides experience that individuals might not otherwise have as well as the opportunity for internships and the ability to make important contacts.

There are no certification or licensing requirements for theater managers.

Many theater managers work their way up the career ladder to management positions. They start at the bottom in the theater and after obtaining experience, move up the ranks. Some managers work their way up to management positions, while others earn degrees that prepare them for high-level jobs in the industry.

Theater managers need an array of skills. They must be creative individuals with a vision in order to make their theater (and its productions) successful. Individuals should have marketing skills, accounting skills, business skills, and more. The ability to get along well with people is mandatory. Strong communications skills, both written and verbal, are essential. The ability to multitask effectively and keep a cool head at all times is also necessary. A knowledge of theater production is required.
