Working with another trained professional provides an understanding of the basics of pool maintenance within a few months. Those considering running their own business should further their education by enrolling in college courses in sales, math, accounting, and small business management. People who are interested in a pool maintenance career should also take advanced courses in electrical applications, electronics, plumbing, and hydraulics.

Swimming pool servicers who operate their own businesses will need to be licensed and possibly receive certification from their state's department of health.

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Inner drive and ambition determine the success of a pool technician's business as they work to attract new clients. They also need to keep up with the technology of swimming pool maintenance to stay knowledgeable about new equipment and services available to their clients. Other important traits include a strong work ethic, persistence, and good communication skills.
