Sports Equipment Managers

Requirements

Education and Training Requirements

High School

High school courses that will be helpful include computer science, mathematics, and business. Serving as the equipment manager of one of your high school athletic teams or clubs will give you a great introduction to work in this field.

Postsecondary Training

Many equipment managers have completed at least some postsecondary training. Business and accounting classes can help you prepare to handle equipment budgets and negotiate contracts with manufacturers such as Nike, Reebok, and Adidas. Other recommended classes include computer science, mathematics, English, and speech.

Other Education or Training

To maintain their certification, sports equipment managers must complete continuing education classes and workshops. These opportunities are provided by the Athletic Equipment Managers Association at its annual convention and other events. Contact the association for more information.

Certification, Licensing, and Special Requirements

Certification or Licensing

The Athletic Equipment Managers Association (AEMA) began a professional certification program in 1991. To become a professional equipment manager, applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (1) have a four-year college degree and two years paid, nonstudent employment in athletic equipment management, or (2) have a four-year college degree and 1,400 hours as a student equipment manager. They also must be 21 years of age and be a member in good standing with the AEMA. Once these requirements have been met, candidates must take and pass a certification examination. The certification process also includes continuing education, such as annual conventions, workshops, seminars, and meetings.

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Few people are hired for head equipment manager jobs without first obtaining experience as an assistant equipment manager or working in related positions.

Excellent organizational skills and the ability to get along with many people are critical qualities for equipment managers. Managers must also be able to handle criticism, be creative and responsible, and have some basic computer skills. Sports equipment managers must also be willing to work overtime during the relevant sport's season.
