High School

A background in math and science is required for radio frequency identification device work. Take math classes, particularly algebra, calculus, and trigonometry. Shop classes are also helpful for learning how to work with various types of machinery and tools. 

Postsecondary Education

Coursework covers topics such as digital systems design, electrical circuit theory, and differential equations. Many students participate in cooperative programs, which combines practical work experience with classroom study. Some universities offer five-year programs that lead to a bachelor's and master's degree.

Certification or Licensing

Radio frequency identification device specialists expand their knowledge and skills through certification. The RFID Professional Institute offers the Certified Associate designation to RFID specialists who pass their certification examination. ETA International offers certification for electronics technicians with an understanding of radio frequency identification devices. Candidates for the RFID Specialist certification must meet education and work experience requirements and pass the certification exam. Certification must be renewed every four years.

Most RFID specialists have three or more years of work experience, which includes on-the-job training. The job requires strong knowledge of engineering, electronics, technology, and computers. An understanding of design and production tools and techniques is also essential. RFID specialists are detail-oriented and analytical thinkers, which is required to complete the work tasks and keep projects on schedule. They are cooperative and collaborative, with strong communication and problem-solving abilities. They are capable of working independently as well as with teams. There are variables in the workplace and the work itself may change on a daily basis. RFID specialists must be adaptable and flexible in order to effectively handle these changes while staying focused on the work.
