Fitness Directors

Requirements

Education and Training Requirements

High School

If you are interested in working in a health and fitness facility, take science and physical education classes and get involved in sports activities. It is also important to take family and consumer science classes, which include lessons in diet, health, and nutrition. Business courses can help you prepare for the management aspect of the job.

Postsecondary Training

Fitness directors should have a background in exercise science to be able to serve their clients and understand the needs of their fitness facility. Associate's and bachelor's degree programs in health education, exercise and sports science, fitness program management, and athletic training are offered in colleges all over the country. Typical classes include nutrition education and consulting, anatomy and physiology, business management, biochemistry, and kinesiology. Because the job of fitness director is a higher management position, most employers will require at least an associate's degree in a sports fitness field and several years of experience in the fitness industry.

Other Education or Training

Continuing education opportunities are offered by the Athletics and Fitness Association of America, American Council on Exercise, American Fitness Professionals & Associates, American Society of Exercise Physiologists, IDEA Health & Fitness Association, and the Medical Fitness Association. Contact these organizations for more information.

Certification, Licensing, and Special Requirements

Certification or Licensing

Certification in fitness or exercise science is highly recommended (if not required) to work in a management-level position at a fitness facility. Because there are many kinds of certification available, you should choose a certifying board that offers scientifically based exams and requires continuing education credits. The American Council on Exercise and American Fitness Professionals and Associates are just two of the many organizations with certification programs. Some employers also require that their fitness staff members be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Previous experience as a fitness trainer and/or in a management-related position are required to become a fitness director.

Fitness directors not only need to know about the industry in which they work, but they also have to be comfortable with managing staff. This requires organization, flexibility, and strong communication skills. A friendly disposition and good people skills are also essential. Directors also need excellent leadership and business management skills.
