Summer Program Overview

While we hope our 2021 summer program was our last 100% virtual summer, we’ll bring many elements to a hybrid summer in 2022. Last summer, we used a customized, innovative platform to connect with our summers, share great content, and work and interact in meaningful ways. Our summers tackled substantive transactional, litigation and regulatory client work and learned about our strategy. And, our curriculum went well beyond the practice to include diversity & inclusion programming, team-building events from a graffiti workshop to a charcuterie board class, and weekly fitness an...

Survey Says

Training & Assignments

  • The summer associate program was structured so that we were given the chance to try work from any practice group. Everything I worked on was substantive and gave me a sense of what working in that group would actually look like.”
  • I was shocked at how substantive my summer work was. I prepared things directly for general counsels of clients as a summer associate and experienced an unprecedented level of client and partner interaction. I was also on a trial team that went to trial.”
  • I was given substantive assignments that a first-year would ordinarily work on, including drafting an ex parte application, drafting discovery responses, and the like. I received feedback after every assignment. I also loved that there was a workflow coordinator to ensure that we have the perfect amount of work.”
  • Working directly with the attorneys I would work with as an associate was invaluable. I was given tasks that would be typical for a first year and received feedback that helped me improve and understand the role I would take on as part of the team.”

Social Opportunities

  • Social events included things like going to baseball games, cooking classes, painting classes, nights out, lunches, kickball, etc. It was extensive.”
  • There are weekly, if not biweekly, social events to encourage bonding with the office. I was always amazed that, even though the firm attorneys were busy, they came out to the events and did not treat us like ’interns,’ but as future members of the firm.”

Associate Experience vs. Summer Expectations

  • I have found the firm has upheld it's promises. They touted the collegial, respectful, thoughtful environment, and that has held true. There is a lot of respect at Orrick—respect for differences, diversity, time. I have been pleasantly surprised at how much Orrick cares about each employee.”
  • My experience as a summer very closely matches my experience as an associate. I am pleasantly surprised at the level of mentorship and training that the firm provides.”
  • I've been pleasantly surprised by my experiences so far. I assumed that while I was given substantive work as a summer associate, as a first year, I would not be doing substantive work at all. That is not the case- I've worked with every partner in my group on a substantive level and have been given chances to draft documents and meaningfully contribute.”

Favorite Summer Events

  • The annual Orrick Surf Trip!”
  • My favorite summer event was the Summer Associate Academy where we were flown out to the San Francisco office with all of the other summer associates around the country”
  • My favorite summer events were going to Magic Castle, an invite-only magic show in Hollywood, and Disneyland!”
