Summer Program Overview

Our summer program is purposefully designed to allow prospective Locke Lord lawyers the opportunity to experience the real-life working environment at Locke Lord. Our clerks undertake meaningful work that benefits our clients. To help integrate our summer associates into the firm, we assign a mentoring team to each summer associate, generally from different departments in the firm. We also allow summer associates to try different practice areas during their summer so that they can better decide what type of practice they want in the future. Founded on the principle that we take our wo...

Survey Says

Training & Assignments

  • “The work I was given is the same type of work that I have been given during my first year as an associate. Locke Lord crafted a summer program that mirrors life as a young associate.”
  • “All work I had as a summer was substantive. Each assignment was treated as an opportunity to learn and add value at the same time.”
  • “I drafted a motion in limine in a high-profile white collar case, [and] I submitted an external legal memo for a big client. I also had the opportunity to sit in on a deposition. In addition, I completed important research assignments to include in summary judgment motions.”
  • “I helped draft ancillary documents, closing checklist, and other documents in M&A transactions as a summer. I got to choose what project I wanted to be on; I was not just assigned things at random.”

Social Opportunities

  • “The events were well attended, covered a wide range of topics such that every individual in my summer program had a different ‘favorite’ event, and every event was enjoyable.”
  • “Associates and partners were all accessible. Attorneys at the firm made a genuine effort to get to know summers on a personal and professional level.”
  • “Our social events were amazing! We went to lunch each day with a different attorney. We did shooting clays, bowling, attended a magic show, attended many happy hour events, [and] attended dinners at partners' homes. In addition, we did an event where we created our own pizza. We did a wine tasting event and so many other events that allowed us to mingle with firm attorneys and other associates. We also had breakfast together every pay day.”
  • “Loved all of the events; we had a good spread of purely social events along with events that were meant to teach and mentor.”

Associate Experience vs. Summer Expectations

  • “I have been pleasantly surprised at how much substantive work I've been given after starting a month ago.”
  • “I was able to choose my practice area. The nature of the work I am doing in my practice area matches the experiences I had as a summer associate, although I have more responsibility now as I gain more experience. I work with all partners in my practice group.”
  • “Projects generally tended to be more interesting on the whole as a summer associate because the attorneys made a conscious effort to share interesting projects. Most of my job now is drafting pleadings, etc., which was not a substantial part of my work as a summer associate.”
  • “Generally, associate life is much more time consuming that anticipated, but that's what I signed up for.”

Favorite Summer Events

  • “Associates’ progressive dinner party.”
  • “An overnight trip to Gruene, Texas to float down the river, play games, and go to Gruene Music Hall.”
  • “Clay shooting.”
