BakerHostetler’s summer associate program is designed to expose law students to many facets of the firm’s practice. Each summer associate is partnered with a senior associate, often former summer associates themselves, who facilitate introductions to other attorneys in the office and offer advice and direction about our firm, office culture, and clients. You will receive ongoing feedback as you work on assignments, and the attorneys you work with will also formally evaluate your performance as assignments are completed. Our summer program provides a strong balance of realistic work wi...

Survey Says

Training & Assignments

  • “The work was interesting and challenging. I enjoyed that the work came from all practice areas, rather than being assigned to one practice area. This allowed me to have a well-rounded experience and to further determine my interests. The workflow was managed by a few partners to make sure that we all stayed steadily busy.”
  • “Excellent substantive work. As a summer associate, I was able to assist with dispositive drafting (such as drafting [a motion for summary judgment]), and I got the opportunity to attend multiple hearings and a mediation.”
  • “Training was plentiful, and work assignments were an accurate taste of the work junior associates often perform.”
  • “There was [programming such as] a dedicated program to improve our writing, weekly meetings with the hiring partner, ratings and feedback on completed assignments, and plenty of opportunities to seek out interesting work.”

Social Opportunities

  • “Events were well organized and enjoyable. We had a lot of opportunities to get to know associates and partners at the firm.”
  • “We had a good balance [of] fun events that was not too overwhelming. Events every night would have been stressful, and they do a great job letting you have fun and meet people and let you live a life outside the program.”
  • “When I was a summer associate, I had many opportunities to interact with attorneys in social settings. The firm also planned events that were geared toward summer associate camaraderie. I was able to build bonds with attorneys and fellow summer associates.”
  • “The firm made it a point to plan interesting events. In addition to the standard cocktail parties, there were a number of outdoor activities and sporting events.”

Associate Experience vs. Summer Expectations

  • “My time as a summer associate was consistent with my time as an associate so far. Attorneys were transparent with the summer associates about life as an associate.”
  • “My experience practicing at my firm has lined up well with my expectations as a summer associate. I was told that I would be able to choose my practice group, and I was. I was told that although workload may be heavy at times, that the firm values its people and a work-life balance, and in my experience, that has been true.”
  • “The firm promised, and has provided me with, an opportunity to work with multiple partners and multiple practice areas. The firm has been very accommodating in allowing me to work with numerous partners and senior associates across the firm to gain experience in the areas where I am most interested. The work-life balance promised is available for those who wish to have that.”
  • “I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of corporate work I have been able to get involved in so early on. As a summer, it was often difficult for attorneys to work us in on fast moving corporate work, but as a first-year, the firm has made it a point to help me work in my desired practice area.”

Favorite Summer Events

  • “Cleveland summer solstice party.”
  • “Kayaking followed by a local dinner with several partners and associates.”
  • “I really enjoyed clay shooting!”
