Careers: Don't be afraid to explore "each and every by-way"

Published: Sep 22, 2009

"That's when I figured that I could do anything if I was simply methodical about it. I went to the library—and this was before the Internet—and I searched for a career that was creative, would not fall into a routine, involved problem solving and making things. It also had to be dynamic. I came up with special effects."—Jamie Hyneman, co-host of The Discovery Channel's MythBusters show, as quoted in The Wall Street Journal.

The article—which really is worth reading—offers a perfect insight into the life of someone who chose to follow their passions and sense of adventure rather than climbing on the corporate treadmill. Charting Hyneman's unusual career journey from his time studying Russian linguistics through running a charter diving business in the Caribbean all the way up to his current position, the piece should give hope to anyone who despairs at the thought of following a well-mapped career path.

All of which rather brings to mind the following song. Because admit it: who doesn't want to feel like it could have been written expressly for you?
