Medical screeners are employed at physicians’ offices, hospitals, clinics, surgical centers, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), and other medical facilities.

Starting Out

Those who are interested in working as medical screeners can learn about job openings via medical career fairs, wants ads in the newspaper, and job sites such as LinkedIn, or they can apply directly to health care companies. Many large hospitals and HMOs have career Web sites that provide job listings.

An experienced screener can advance by receiving pay raises and being asked to supervise the work of other screeners. With additional training, a medical screener can become a medical assistant, who maintains medical records, assists physicians as they examine and treat patients, and performs routine office duties. Some screeners choose to become nurses, medical technologists, laboratory technicians, or surgical technologists.
