The investment banking and securities dealing industry included 16,707 business that collectively generated $133 billion in revenue in 2019, according to the research firm, IBISWorld. Major companies include Bank of America’s Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Lazard, and Jefferies. Investment banks are located throughout the United States and the world. 

Starting Out

Many banks host job fairs, often called “Super Saturdays,” in the spring, in which college seniors can visit the firm (or attend job fairs on campus) and network with company recruiters. Your college’s career services office or professors can provide information on these events.

Analysts typically work at an investment bank firm for two to three years before being leaving to earn their MBAs, found a start-up, or work at private equity, venture capital, or hedge fund firms. Those who go back to school to earn an MBA may re-enter the investment banking industry as associates, who supervise the work of analysts and handle more complex tasks. After years of experience, they can advance to the positions of vice president, director, and managing director.
