Training & Assignments

  • “The work I got as a summer associate felt substantive and like I was really helping the team. Simpson lets summers work on both litigation and corporate matters, which I found particularly helpful as I was undecided on a practice area at the time.”
  • “I was on a variety of matters that ranged from very small to very large cases, and all of my work product ended up making its way into court filings and/or client memos. The associates and partners went out of their way to give me positive, constructive feedback along the way.”
  • “I was given work assignments that otherwise would have been given to first-year associates, and I was generally treated as a member of the team. My work was clearly helpful to the attorneys I was working with, and I really appreciated being able to do substantive work and see my contributions making a difference.”
  • “We were given a lot of latitude to direct our own summer work experience. The assigning attorneys worked very hard to staff us on matters according to our interests. I was thrilled with the level of substantive experience I got and couldn't have imagined a better summer associate program for me. I credit the program 100% for the ease with which I transitioned to a first-year associate role in a virtual environment during COVID-19.”

Social Opportunities

  • “The attorneys were very interested in getting to know the summers and made a great effort to create space for those mentoring interactions. The social events were very well attended and appealed to most folks in our class. Our small summer associate class remained very tight knit and it shows in the level of support we provide each other as first-year associates.”
  • “The firm events were a lot of fun and really helped me get to know associates, partners, and folks in my class.”
  • “The summers all got along very well, and the social events built the collegiality among us and the rest of the firm. But my favorite piece of summer-attorney interaction was [when] a mid-level sat down for lunch with me and two peers to explain the fund we would be joining one day and then the next day, brought the three of us along to bring desserts to the fund's paralegals from the firm's cafe.”
  • “Each summer associate has … partner mentors and associate mentors along with both formal and informal outings to meet with mentors and develop relationships. The summer program also provides countless unique and exciting opportunities to explore the city with other summer associates.”

Associate Experience vs. Summer Expectations

  • “My summer was largely representative. I would not say I was misled in any way as a summer, although of course the work only becomes increasingly more difficult / substantive once you start.”
  • “Not entirely different (aside from the pandemic). My expectations seem to line up with what I thought the job would be, but I also spent a lot of time asking associates what the day to day looked like, what the difficulties and positives were, so I did not feel blindsided.”
  • “I didn't expect to work with partners as closely as I am now. I also expected the deal teams to be larger and not as intimate. The summer program had a very different work-life balance, but everyone at the firm was honest about how the summer program is not reflective (in terms of hours) of working at the firm.”
  • “I am impressed how the people truly are THAT NICE. Simpson has a great reputation for doing challenging work and being a hub for the top legal minds. The firm culture stands out on top of that, for encouraging learning and questions and investing in associate happiness and growth. I feel comfortable asking questions to so many people both the partner and associate level which helps me contribute more substantially to deals. Even remotely, this culture remains and has made my experience positive.”
