Survey Says

Training & Assignments

  • “I received more substantive work than many of my peers at other firms. We had helpful trainings throughout the summer and I had meaningful interactions with associates and partners on case teams. Our teams provided frequent and helpful feedback on assignments and I was able to choose any type of assignment from any practice area that I wanted to work in.”
  • “One of the best things about the Sidley summer associate program is that you’re assigned to work as part of a deal team for actual deals in the office and are an active part of the deal during the summer program. This means that you get the same type of work as a first year associate right from the beginning of the program.”
  • “I had the opportunity to work with real deal teams and perform real work for clients. I even took the pen on a number of documents that went directly to clients and opposing counsel. At the same time, I was never overworked—we had plenty of social opportunities to balance out the days.”
  • “The firm has an assignment board over the summer where attorney post different projects and summer associates can pick projects they would like to participate in. But over time less projects are posted to the board and you are supposed to pick up work organically.”

Social Opportunities

  • “Our summer group is still very close almost two years later. It’s one of the best things about working here full time now: on day one I had a bunch of good friends I could confide in or just joke around with. On top of that, I met many attorneys who really impressed me with their eagerness to get to know my fellow summer associates and me.”
  • “The social aspect of Sidley’s summer program is what made the summer worth it. Although I knew that that summers were given cool assignments, it was the people who made me want to come back. The summer events were fun, yes, but more importantly, Sidley makes it a priority to encourage all members of the firm to meet the new summers. I felt like I engaged with junior associates, senior associates, and partners.”
  • “The firm really made a strong effort to make sure that the social aspects of the summer program were fun and different than just drinking at a bar. There were a handful of events with cocktails, of course, but a good variety of New York Broadway shows, private museum tours, restaurants, networking events, and volunteer events.”
  • “The summer associate program was filled with many exciting events, ranging from a deep-sea fishing trip to kayaking to restaurant outings.”

Associate Experience vs. Summer Expectations

  • “The work I did during my summer was representative of some of the work I do as an associate. I have been pleasantly surprised by the amount of responsibility and client interaction I have as a junior associate compared to a summer associate. The attorneys are exceptionally friendly and want summer and junior associates to succeed here.”
  • “Everything has been pretty similar to my experience as a summer associate. The main difference is the amount of work/hours but that’s to be expected.”
  • “Over the summer, most of our assignments were long-term projects with deadlines at the end of our 10-week program. However, now as a practicing attorney, most of the projects I handle have very quick turnaround times. Most of the work I am given come from organic relationships; there isn’t a security system in place if you aren’t receiving it.”
  • “My experience has matched my expectations. I’m receiving excellent mentorship and substantive assignments.”

Favorite Summer Events

  • “My favorite summer event was playing basketball at Staples Center on the Laker’s floor—a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
  • “The end-of-summer offer party at Carnegie Hall.”
  • “Art Institute of Chicago private gallery showing.”
