Survey Says

Training & Assignments

  • “The summer program uses a hybrid work coordination and hallway-staffing model, like what associates use. It was a good way to get a wide breadth of assignments and work with a lot of different people. The training also allowed summer associates to try litigation and transactional work.”
  • “Had the experience to get fully integrated on a team. Senior associates would include me in email chains with relevant parties and refer to me as a member of the team, which sounds insignificant, but meant a great deal and reflected a commitment to making the summer experience real.”
  • “[I had the] opportunity to participate in Advocacy Institute (‘AI’) where you write a mock appellate brief and present oral argument at the 9th Circuit courthouse in Pasadena.  [It was a] unique opportunity to get hands-on brief-writing and oral argument experience during the summer.”
  • “There was a good balance between client work, training, and mock exercises. O'Melveny devotes a lot of time to their mock brief and mock deal programs, which were really informative and helpful.”

Social Opportunities

  • About a month before the start of the summer program (as relief while we were all dreading law school finals), the firm emailed our class with several different options for summer events to get a flavor of what we liked and wanted to do for fun. The firm listened to our preferences on events and went out of its way to make sure we had an opportunity to bond with attorneys and our summer associate class. Attorneys were generally available to get coffee whenever we wanted and the events were always a good time.”
  • Everybody was incredibly friendly and genuine. I really loved my summer and felt that I connected well with several people.”
  • All of my best culinary experiences in life so far came during that summer. My mentors then are my mentors now and we built a strong relationship. The summer associates got very close to each other, we spent many hours together and remain close now. What was surprising was how much time we were able to spend with the partners and associates. I worked across from a counsel who I could cross the hall and chat with many times when I was stumped.”
  • OMM is really great about organizing fun and engaging events where you get to know the associates, counsel, and partners in an accessible and fun way.”

Associate Experience vs. Summer Expectations

  • My summer experience was actually highly effective training for my first year as an associate here, with numerous skills and systems coming into play in both.”
  • Juggling different assignments is a new challenge.”
  • I feel that everything was represented to me accurately. I was told I would have the chance to explore different practice areas and I have been. The culture seems as good as it did during the summer. I feel that everything was very transparent and that I got exactly what I signed up for.”
  • The expectations were in line. I felt prepared for the job I was accepting. I was pleasantly surprised by how much responsibility the firm gives junior attorneys. I had heard this was the case, but it certainly turned out to be true. I have been given experiences in a lot of different areas of litigation/industries, as promised.”
