The Summer Program provides summer associates hands-on work where they participate in active matters — going to court, writing memoranda, sitting in on client meetings and generally doing what a first-year associate does.

In Kramer Levin’s summer program, summer associates are not required to rotate through departments, and can choose where you work. Each week, summer associates are given the opportunity to update your department preferences, which lets them customize work assignments to their own ambitions. The idea is to give summer associates the broadest possible...

Survey Says

Training & Assignments

  • We were able to sample assignments from any and all different departments. There was a genuine effort to get you any type of work you were interested in trying.”
  • Summer associates are assigned substantive work from the get-go. In addition to working on client matters, summer associates get the opportunity to pair with senior associates for pro bono related work. This allows summer associates to meaningfully develop their legal skills under supervision as well as form connections throughout the firm.”
  • I was given meaningful, interesting research assignments and received detailed, helpful feedback.”

Social Opportunities

  • I thought the summer associate program was perfectly balanced to allow us to socially interact with each other and with the attorneys at the firm, without overloading us with social events. One of my favorite social aspects of the firm was that the firm provided a budget for associates to take the summers on coffee breaks. This allowed us to interact in a less formal manner with the associates and develop friendships that have lasted beyond the summer program.”
  • A good amount of social events without it feeling overwhelming. The team always made sure we knew that everything was truly optional which was nice.”
  • Very high camaraderie level among summer associates—we had a lot of fun; bonded; and now look forward to seeing each other on Zoom, talking over lync, and eventually [being together] in the office. Events for the most part were fun—not too overbearing and generally just allowed us to mingle and hang out.”
  • I think expectations were set fairly. You have more responsibility as an associate, but that's not a surprise.”
  • Now that I have returned to the firm, I receive more face time with the partners in my practice than I expected. I believe that this is related to the firm taking a proactive approach to mentoring in light of the limited amount of interaction we get with other attorneys due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I have also been pleasantly surprised by the amount of pro-bono opportunities that are available, and the flexibility the firm provides in choosing what pro bono projects we would like to work on”

Favorite Summer Events

  • Ping pong at SPIN New York.”
  • Volunteering at a food shelter with my fellow summers and other members of the firm.”
  • The cooking competition.”
