Survey Says

Training & Assignments

  • “Some of the work I did as a summer associate is exactly the work done by first- through third-year associates. I took the first cut at drafting ancillary deal documents and doing diligence work that is expected of junior associates.”
  • “Centralized staffing system made it easy to coordinate assignments. Attorneys were always able and willing to assist.”
  • “Our assignments were hands-on and substantive, targeted at exposing us to a breadth of different types of drafting, negotiation and diligence exercises that reflect the broad practice of associates across the office.”
  • “Summer associates were provided substantive assignments, including drafting assignments and research assignments, all of which were directly beneficial to the firm's clients. Due to the lean staffing on most clients as well as the associated deals, summer associates actually had the ability to be helpful and provide meaningful work product as opposed to being stuck with busy work. The firm provided a large amount of formal training throughout the summer on various aspects of the work, which was helpful for a broad overview. …”

Social Opportunities

  • “Gunderson's summer class sizes are small—there were seven of us in the New York office. This means you get to be very close with your summer colleagues and develop meaningful friendships. …”
  • “Gunderson had a reasonable event calendar during the summer—formal events occurred once a week, with other events sporadically scheduled throughout the week. I felt it was a nice balance, and the social calendar never felt overwhelming. …”
  • “The summer events were well thought out and planned, with good opportunities to meet people across different practice groups and interesting opportunities to make the most of a summer program based in New York City.”
  • “The thing that sets Gunderson apart is the culture. The summer events really highlighted this, as everyone was extremely engaged and they were a lot of fun.”

Associate Experience vs. Summer Expectations

  • “Everyone was pretty upfront about the workload once you become an associate. When people say to enjoy your summer associate experience, you should! There is zero reason to stress about working a lot of hours as a summer; it really is a time to enjoy yourself, and everyone was open about that.”
  • “Gunderson is very upfront with you, and there were no surprises. Unless you specify that there is a practice group you want to join (i.e., funds or tech group), you will generally be assigned to the corporate group.”
  • “The summer was an accurate depiction of life at the firm. There are less-structured social events during the year, but people still hang out and get lunch together. The work as a first year is very similar to the projects you do as a summer associate, but you very quickly get much more client interaction once you're full time.”
  • “The firm and attorneys that I spoke to were very candid about how life differs as a first-year associate from the summer program. I was not surprised at all.”

Favorite Summer Events

  • “Summer trip to Tahoe—we had a great time!”
  • “My favorite summer event was an axe throwing and beer tasting event (intentionally scheduled in that order) at Kick Axe and Three Beers Brewing in Brooklyn.”
  • “Zach Brown band concert at Fenway Park.”
