Survey Says

Training & Assignments

  • The firm handles training and work assignments very well for the summer associate program. The program is very structured and initial contact for assignments comes from the summer coordinators. The summer coordinators give you a brief overview of the assignment before you meet with the assigning attorney to go over the specifics of the assignment.”
  • It was a modified version of the free market system—summers could go after work with specific attorneys, but had to clear their projects with the summer coordinators. Summer coordinators also reach out with projects.”
  • The summer work was substantive, and we all received extensive feedback on each assignment. One of the memos I wrote ended up meaningfully contributing to an appellate brief, and another was forwarded in full directly to the client.”
  • The work was engaging and all of my assignments were relevant--in fact, some of the research was incredibly important to the underlying cases and ultimately made an appearance in appellate briefing. I also had the opportunity to work on pro bono matters as a summer, which was extremely rewarding. All the teams I worked with made me feel as though I was a valued addition to the group, even though I was only involved for the space of a short-term assignment or two.”

Social Opportunities

  • There were lots of in person events staged at various times of the day and throughout the week. Associates and partners were encouraged to attend and there was often a very strong turn out beyond just the summer associates and their mentors.”
  • The summer events were well-planned, and well attended by attorneys. I left the summer knowing a large percentage of the hundreds of attorneys in the office. The summer class also gelled really well—we had our own group message thread (which has continued to be used to this day, even as first years!)”
  • The social aspects were generally well thought out, comprising a mix of group activities, dinners, as well as small group events at the homes of partners or other locales. The firm encouraged summers to interact with attorneys at all levels of the firm, provided a summer partner and associate buddy, and I never had the sense that they were just passing the time while the program ran. Additionally, I developed strong connections with my fellow summer associates, who I now work with on a daily basis.”
  • There was a great sense of camaraderie. I also found that associates and partners took a genuine interest in me as a person and they were easy for me to keep in touch with before I returned to the firm.”

Associate Experience vs. Summer Expectations

  • The only way the summer program differed from practice is during the summer, the summer coordinators monitored your workload and would distribute assignments. In practice, senior associates and partners assign you projects and the only person monitoring your workload is yourself.”
  • Making connections as a summer has made all the difference. It has given me a support system as well as a sense of the firm's culture, which has been huge during the pandemic.  The firm went out of its way to communicate what the real expectations would be when we actually started as associates.  I found this was generous and helpful, as it meant I knew what I getting in to, and a lot of the summer involved receiving professionalism and professional development tips meant to assist us in our upcoming careers.”
  • As a summer, you only work on one assignment at a time, which is definitely quite different from the experience as a full-time associate. And, of course, pandemic life and working from home has dramatically changed the working dynamic, though I truly feel the firm is making the best of it and working hard to maintain a collegial and collaborative environment. Overall, I think everything is as I expected.”
  • I've been pleasantly surprised by how transparent our summer was. No ball hiding—a pretty good reflection of what actual associate life is like.”
