Summer Program Overview

Freshfields' 10-week summer associate programs in the United States (New York, DC, and Silicon Valley) and London give second-year U.S. law school students a taste of what it is like to work at a top tier international law firm.

While we offer the resources of a large, international firm, our U.S. summer associate class is around 25-30 students. So, we are able to tailor the experience to ensure that it is substantive, relevant, and rewarding. Our U.S. summer associates work closely with senior associates and partners on substantive work on marquee cases.

Survey Says

Training & Assignments

  • “The firm gives summer associates real, interesting, and challenging client work that is reflective of the work that they will do as an associate.”
  • “I hit the ground running, immediately joining a major international arbitration filing. While it was an intense experience, it may have been the best possible way to get a realistic sense of life at the firm—the work is interesting, the hours are long, and the people are wonderful.”
  • “The firm allows and encourages summer associates to dabble in various practice areas and, at the same time, gives very substantive work to summers in all practice areas. During my summer, I was able to work with the M&A, litigation, international arbitration, and restructuring and insolvency teams, and [I] received substantive projects from each of them.”

Social Opportunities

  • “The social events were great! I went on a lot of summer lunches with associates and had a really nice time at the other after-work events. There was about one big event a week which seemed like a good amount to me. There was also flexibility such that if you wanted to make your own event, there was a budget of $85 per person (1:1 ratio of summers and associates) for after-work events. For us, this included dinner, drinks, etc.”
  • “The events were very well done and well attended. Everyone at the firm—partners, counsel, associates, staff—made efforts to attend events open to those beyond summer associates and made a real effort to make summers feel part of the team. The firm's commitment to planning a diverse set of interesting events carried over to the 2020 virtual summer program.”
  • “Great social events that were consistently well attended by associates and partners. Each practice group hosts a social event where all summer associates are invited and get to know associates and partners in the entire firm better.”

Associate Experience vs. Summer Expectations

  • “My experience as an associate has matched my experience as a summer associate in significant, positive ways. The work has always been interesting; partners and other colleagues have been excellent mentors and have provided many opportunities for training, including through helpful, substantive comments on my work; and the people are always friendly, even when things get stressful.”
  • “The summer program set realistic expectations. As a summer, I was told that I would be allowed to rotate between litigation work and M&A work upon joining the firm—the firm allowed that rotation, even in the midst of the uncertainty of 2020.”
  • “My experience as an associate differs mainly in the hours I work. Emails no longer stop coming in at 6:00 p.m. like they did when I was a summer associate. Otherwise, the firm was fairly honest and transparent about what associate life would be like.”

Favorite Summer Events

  • “Two-week secondment to the London office.”
  • “Design your own Nike shoes.”
  • “Milk Bar baking event.”
