Summer Program Overview

We believe in giving our lawyers a high level of exposure and responsibility from the beginning, and this starts during the summer. Our summers are encouraged to work on a variety of assignments, gaining exposure to the full range of our practice areas. In addition to real work experience, our clerks participate in a range of in-house and external training sessions: a corporate skills training, a legal writing seminar, as well as a presentation specifically geared to preparing them to work as international lawyers. In order to provide exposure to our global network, and when travel re...

Survey Says

Training & Assignments

  • “The work I received as a summer associate was extremely substantive. My billable, pro bono, and business development work all dovetailed with what I do today as a first-year associate. For example, one of my favorite matters involved an individual representation that was staffed with only me and a partner. Additionally, I traveled to Europe twice during my summer to work on a client matter, spending about one-month total there as part of the CC team on the ground at the client site.”
  • “As a summer, I was able to use my foreign language skills in both billable and pro bono work. I met multiple pro bono clients and had the opportunity to sit in on a trial witness prep session.”
  • “I had a great experience at Clifford Chance as a summer associate. I was given real responsibilities when it came to work, and partners and associates alike took time out of their days to explain assignments to me and make sure I understood why I was doing what I was doing.”
  • “Weekly training sessions were offered to summer associates along with informational breakfasts and lunches throughout the summer program. Assignment coordinators distributed assignments based on each individual's area of interest and continuously engaged with summer associates to help their development.”

Social Opportunities

  • “Social events averaged around two events every week. We had [a] wonderful time overall. We, together as a firm, went to [a] Broadway show, participated in [a] wine tasting, had an ‘out of office’ day at a country club, and had a picnic at Victorian Gardens in Central Park.”

From the Firm: Families are also invited to attend the Victorian Gardens event.

  • “Social events were an important part of the summer program and provided unique opportunities to interact with members of the firm from every level.”
  • “Absolutely amazing summer associate program. All summer associates spend two weeks working from any global office they desire. I had the BEST time working in Singapore and taking weekend vacations to the surrounding countries. Because the firm has such a global culture, I actually work with some of the Singapore associates on [a] project currently.”
  • “The CC summer program gave me so many opportunities to interact with firm attorneys through daily firm-reimbursed lunches and coffee breaks and tons of after-work social events. My summer class was incredibly close and remains close even as associates. We speak every day in various group chats and see each other most weeks for brunches or movie nights.”

Associate Experience vs. Summer Expectations

  • “My experience has not differed greatly. Summers are given substantive work throughout the summer that prepares them to practice at the firm. The only difference is that you are working on more matters and have more responsibility.”
  • “A difference is that I have the opportunities to work directly with partners when practicing at the firm. In summer, I mostly worked with junior associates. Another pleasant difference is that I can follow a project from scratch to closing, which was not quite possible due to the 10-week fixed period of summer internship.”
  • “The firm was very transparent during the summer, which made returning to the firm as an associate seamless.”
  • “My summer experience gave me a realistic idea of how my first year as an associate would play out. Obviously, the hours are longer, but the strong mentorship and training I experienced as a summer have continued into my first year.”

Favorite Summer Events

  • “Traveling to one of the Clifford Chance foreign offices for two weeks.”
  • “Sitting on stage at a Broadway show.”
  • “A private box for a Washington Nationals game.”
